Final piece

I started my idea from wires and electric equipment. Electric equipment such as computers and televisions used to have a lot of wires, and it looks really messy when the number of wires becomes large. However, as far as those wires are well connected, the equipment works well so that people who use the equipment may not get the feeling of messy even it looks messy. What I want to express is that something disordered might be in order in another aspect. This is interesting because this is a harmony between two totally different feelings. We could feel this kind of harmony in our common life like messy cloud in the neat, blue sky. We would feel comfortable even if those two kind of opposite elements goes together.

I tried to make a video with two different feelings and combine it with some sound effect but iphone is really not a good tool for making a video. I am not able to make the video I want, so I change my idea about the final piece again.

I come up with an idea when I was trying to redo my Micro Project 5. I used the effect of mosaic in MP5 and I do like the idea of mosaic although that makes my MP5 a failure project. I like the feeling of those small segments in the picture. In my opinion, those segments are caused by some barriers, and these barriers do not look weird in the picture. We do not think those barriers look weird because we do not notice them. They exists in the picture and divide the picture in some segments in harmony.

I took two sets of pictures to express those barriers in our life. The first sets of pictures are photos of a tree in from of my dorm. I put a piece of rice paper in front of my camera and took the first picture. One can barely recognize that as a tree. Then I took the second picture with the barrier of window-blinds. The tree is more clear now. I took the third picture with the barrier of window and the barriers become less and less. The last picture is my favorite. I took it with the barrier of screen window and the result is pretty close to I said. The barriers exists in harmony.

The second set are pictures of trees. I choose those trees in south oval because I could take iron fence into the picture as well. However, I choose light as barrier instead of iron fence because I want to tell that we sometimes do not notice the real barriers in the pictures. At first, I choose the same angle for all four pictures and all those pictures have the angle of picture two. But the barriers of light is not that obvious in that angle for the last picture. So I change the angle for my last picture and generate that picture in the final piece. Since the angle of the last picture changes, I change the angles of rest three  pictures as well. Among these four pictures ,the last picture is my favorite because I do take light into the picture and make this invisible barrier visible. Besides, the audience may not be able to find out light is the real barrier with the last picture.

Failure project

The biggest failure in this semester is probably my micro project 4. I did not take an earphone with me in class so I could not get what exactly the track sounds like during the process of making it. Later I find that the effect in the trace is so loud that sounds really noisy. I failed to create a feeling of slender by giving the track to my friends. Now I realize that I should make sure what a sound track sounds like when making it. Sound tracks are different from the visual works. One cannot interpret how a sound track is by treating them as visual works. We cannot “see” how a sound track is.
My biggest success in this semester is the micro project 5. At the very beginning of making the micro project 5, I was thinking of take a series of pictures of steam after watching the video about river in class. This is because the steam fit the word “split” well. However, I could not find any small steams near the campus area, so I change my object from steam to branch in the end. The use of Andreamosaic is a success to me. It is my first time to use this software and the effect is really pleasant. The mosaic effect in the final piece does give my friends a feeling of “split” and I am satisfied with this work as well.
If I could redo one project, I would redo the micro project 4. I choose the micro project 4 because I know which point is not good enough in my previous work. I would use an earphone for sure and search for some more sound effect in the Internet if I could do this project again. I would also show my sound track to my friends before uploading to make sure the audience do receive a feeling of slender through the project.

MP5

When hearing the word “hook”, the first object I come up with is the branch. Since we need to choose an object in our daily life, I choose the tree in front of my dorm that I would see every day. The photo of a tree does fit the word “split” because the tree has a lot of branches. However, I don’t think it is “split” enough. So I pick up 12 photos of different branches on the Internet, and put these 12 pictures together by AndreaMosaic software to form the photo I took. The result is good and I do feel the word “split” from the final piece. The pictures I picked from the Internet are in the file added to carmen.

Response to Carver: this novel introduces an story happens between the narrator, the narrator's wife, Laura, and a blind friend of the narrator's wife, Robert. At the beginning of the novel, the narrator's wife told the narrator that her blind friends who has not meet for 10 years is going to visit her. Laura also tells Terri that once when Robert touch her face, she got a unique feeling that she never felt before. That makes Terri unhappy of course. However, in the end of the story, when Terri holding Robert's hand drawing a Cathedral, he got the unique feeling as well. Terri get a totally different feeling and fully understand his wife.

I like this novel because by telling a story between blind people and normal people, the author introduces us a new way to feel the world. Sometimes people would feel the world much more different if they change a way to experience it. This reminds me of our MP 4. We separate the video to sound and image first. Then combine them after polishing and finally generate a brand new feeling. This novel offers us an idea of discovering the world we known in a new way, which I think is really interesting.

Response to Wallace: The author introduces an idea that we could change our attitude if we can not change the position we are in. This idea is really brilliant because everyone have hard time in their lives. With this idea, one then could be able to choose to be positive or negative themselves. As a student in OSU, I sometimes may mistakenly take some really difficult lessons that I would never want to go to anymore after the first exam. Keep a positive attitude myself is essential to me at this point of time.

The question I have to this article is that since the author express an idea that we could choose to be positive or negative ourselves, why I still feel his article negative after I reading it? Why don't he express the same idea in a positive way.

My key- I choose this because I need this to allow me back to my apartment. Also, I  can not leave my door unlocked when leaving my apartment. If I do not have a key with me when I am outside of my apartment, I would probably feel panic because I have no place to go in the evening! That's not good so I would certainly take that with me.
                             Feeling of Safety

My BuckID- I choose BuckID because I could take any bus in Columbus free by BuckID! I do not need to worried about if I take change in my pocket or not. What's more, I can also buy food or print some paper work with BuckID in campus! It is incredibly convenient!
                                 Incredibly convenience

My iphone- I choose my iphone because I use this to get connected with my friends. I downloaded the app of facebook, which allows me to trace every news about my friends. I do not miss any message from my friends. Perhaps next minute I would receive a incredible news which I never want to miss from my friends' phone!
                                Stay connected

My wallet- I choose this because wallet is really necessary for a man live near campus. There are always homeless people asking for change on high St. Avioding meeting them or take your wallet!
                              Money and Change

My contact lens- I choose this because contact lens are really amazing things for me. The world in my eye no more restructed in the frame after I change my glasses into contact lens. I would feel uncomfortable to wear my glasses again after taking the contact lens for months. I love them!
                          Brilliant field of vision

Response to Kaprow: This article talks about brushing teeth. The writer express an idea that art could be anything common in our lives. By using the example of brushing teeth, the author tells us that sometimes arts are not that complicated. As well as one have a heart of art, one can easily find arts in our daily life.
I am a little confused about why author choose brushing teeth to introduce her ideas. Since what she wants to express is that anything in out daily life could be arts, why don't she choose something else?
I feel confused because the author mentioned many times about brushing teeth and I find that she focuses on that a lot.

Response to Weschler "Desert": This article introduces an artist who sells his gallery and looking for art ideas in the desert. I think the author wants to tell us that whenever you come up with an idea which you think is really good, feel free to do so. Although the artist did not come up with any brilliant idea in the end when he left the desert, the artist still consider that as an unique experience.
The question I have about this article is that the artist mentioned at the end of the article that he did not tell anyone, even his friends, about his experience. Then why he tells us about his journey to the deserts? What's difference between us and his friends? Those are my questions to this article.

Response to Suanders: The author of the article introduces a book which he thinks is really good to us via this article. I love this article because the author talks about the dignity of being able to provide. The best part if the article to me is author's experience on a plane. He has the sight that other people dont have and have the ability to find those beautiful things in our lives.

Wexner Review

I went to the Wexner Centre to see the Clock exhibition on a Friday evening. The Clock exhibition is a video consists with lots of scenes from different movies. The time in the video is always the same to the reality.

When watching that video, I was thinking that every moment thousands of things are happening in the world. Some of those are common daily things, some of those are ceremonious things. Some of those are comedy, some of those are tragedy. I always complain the hard time in my life before this video. But after watching this movie, I realize that all the hard times are very common and they are a part of my life. Every person is experiencing the same things in their life and we really should not complain that much about the hard times.

Response to Cardiff and Miller: This article talks about sound art. It offers us a new way to feel the world, via the sound way. I appreciate the author's idea of feeling the world by heart. I feel like like for me, a normal guy, could hardly give up my ability to see the world and experience the would in a sound way.

The question I have to this article is that before the author place all those experiments about the sound, will he do that in the visual way first. The reason I mention this is because one can hardly prevent himself fron see something since we all have curiosity. The experience of seeing may affect the experience of listening afterwards.

response to nipple Jesus: this article introduces a painting composed by lots of nipples. One of the main characters in the article, Dave, who was assigned to protect the painting is actually not satisfied with this job.  However, his idea changes after he communicates with the artist, Martha, who made this picture. The artist actually just want to see how people would react after finding out that this picture is made of nipples.

I have difficulty in reading the last part of the article, which mentioned that Dave is feel stupid about himself because he find out that he doesn't know arts. I don't think man should be wrong about those stuff because everyone have their own definition of arts.

I walk form my drom to my art education 2520 class every week. I used to focus on the buildings when using the campes map to guide me. However, when it turns to my own maps in my mind, I tend to focus on some specific scenes, such as street view or chairs and funnels added in my own image. I love the chair picture best because for me it is the same as other land scape in campus. Every time I see it, I would realize that I am really close to Ohio Stadium. I think things like chairs are my own land scape in my map, which might never be noticed by other people. And those things do compose my own map from my dorm to my art education 2520 class.

Response to Yoko One: Yoko One is a Japanese woman. Like most of the people, Yoko One has two sides there are positive side and negative side. I found it pretty useful to remember that every one has two sides in our daily life. For example, sometimes one may make some mistakes, but it does not mean one is a bad person. That person might just feel pretty uncomfortable today and he or she might not be intended.

I found it difficult to figure out author's attitude to Yoko One. It is really difficult to find out that if we should love or not love a person like this. I can feel author's respect to Yoko One, but author's attitude to Yoko One still seems neutral.

The most different experience for me between taking the first ten and then the second ten might be my attitude to those pictures. I took the first ten pictures because I think they are actually really fun or I just feel like taking them as a picture. But when it turns to the second ten pictures, I start to focus on the construction of the picture like symmetrical or asymmetrical.Actually, both two sets of pictures cheer me up because I find something I did not notice in the previous daily life.
Take my fist picture, which is one of my favorite pictures, as an example.I was considering take this picture into a symmetrical one at first, however, it is really hard for me to make it a symmetrical one since its in the corner. Finally I made it into a asymmetrical one and those words in the picture are really good for me. The image from point view of ants and the unstable picture are also my favorites. I covered a leaf on  the camera and put the camera on the ground to make it like the point view of ants. And it is really interesting and I really enjoy taking this picture even though it was cold outside! I also spent a lot of time creating unstable things and that is also really fun.
The experience of taking all those pictures are actually so enjoyable for me in a net shell.

Blog #3

Response to The Walker: this article talks about the relationships between big ideas and art making. Big ideas are not that concise to be used for art making. One should make big ideas more concise so that they could be made for art making. This engages me a lot.

My question to this article is the difference between theme and big idea. Although author does discusses this in the article, I still think the difference between theme and big idea is quite small. Sometimes theme could be big idea while sometimes big idea could be theme. I don't think we can clearly distinguish those two that easy as in the article.

Response to Barrett: This article talks about the relationships between interpretion and connotation. Which interpretion related to something inside and connoation talks about something outside.  I feel it really useful to be careful with the message carried by visual culture. As is known to all, there are lots of difference between eastern culture and western culture. It might cause some inconvinence if one do not pay attention to those details.

My question to this article is that why author uses an single paragraph to talk about linguistic message. I think author could put it into connoted message and denoted message. It might be more easiler for some readers, like me, to read and understand the theme of the article.

Response to the Kidd, Hickey and Weschler “Uncanny Valley” articles

Response to Kidd: The author talks about the question of "true or false" by listing the example of "enemy". The author talks about Left or Right later in the article. I am actually not sure what author is talking about by only reading the single chapter, but I feel like two men in the article are talking about their attitudes. Each specific attitude makes a specific life.
Response to Hickey: the author talks about the exciting and fair basketball starting with a game between Lakers and Seventy-Sixers in 1980. He then talks about how amazing and exciting this game could be and tells us the history of basketball. He finalizes the article with five guiding principle of basketball made by James Naismith in 1891. I really enjoy author portraying the basketball game at the beginning of the article. I was attracted to the article first time I read that.

I feel like that the ending of this article is really difficult. The author uses five guiding principles to end the article. Actually I am not sure with what he suppose to sending to readers by these five principles. I perfer the author point out his attitude at the end of the article so that I won't misunderstand his message.

Response to Wsechler "Uncanny": The author introduces to us how complex smile could be by listing the difficulty of making a digital human face. Later the author further talks about the reaction of eyebrows, ears and nose when emotions are expressed by face. In the end of the article, the author asks if a absolutely human character is possible to make and send his confidence about this to the readers.

This article express his attitude clearly and I don't think I feel something difficult with it.
Hi my name's Hongyi Shu.
I am now in finance major and I am a sophomore student here.Although I am not in the art major, I am actually really interested in arts.I take this class because some friends of mine told me that this class is actually really fun.

I'd like to play video games and work out in RPAC after class. My favorite place to eat is Ohio Union because I live near school and I did not find any better place to eat yet. My favorite brand is A.P.C. but I can hardly found a place to buy in Columbus. My favorite food is salad in the Union market, addicted to corns there. My favorite animal is probably dog and I used to keep one. My favorite drink is green tea.

Glad to have ARTE 2520 lessons this semester!
